Particularly suitable for skin that has thinned, become crepey and prone to inflammation due to menopause.
During the peri-menopause, oestrogen production decreases and this can have an impact on skin. The skin changes often continue well into the post-menopausal years. Most of the changes are similar to age-related deterioration, with a few added extras, including atrophy, lines, poor hydration and wound healing. The dose of HRT currently considered safe doesn’t fully replace premenopausal levels and does not significantly help the skin. Cleverly, we humans have oestrogen receptors in the skin and phytoestrogens can bind to these. Resveratrol is one that is a naturally-occurring, plant-derived, compound, (famously found in red grape skins). By binding to the receptors, it inhibits oxidation produced by free radicals that cause damage to cells and tissues. Phytoestrogens also protect against skin damage, improve wound healing and can lighten melasma in the skin. Resveratrol is also used as anti-acne agent, due to its ability to decrease bacterial replication and inhibit the inflammatory responses. As with most things, the amount getting into your skin is important and the 2% used here is currently believed to be the optimum amount for the best outcome. When niacinamide and retinol (vitamin A) are added, a marked improvement to the texture of mature skin has been demonstrated.
Menopausal skin is often lacking water and lipids, so we use the unbeatable moisture-boosting combination of hyaluronic acid with a small molecule, sodium hyaluronate for thorough moisturisation. Rose extract and hydrosol both contain polyphenols that have been shown to decrease the trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) in skin and reduce inflammation. Rose also contains antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory elements. Vitamin A , B and E all help skin-barrier repair as does the super-charged CoQ-10 (Ubiquinone). Apart from offering free-radical scavenging, these powerful ingredients help resveratrol increase elastin and collagen production and restore depleted skin. As some of these ingredients can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, a broad-spectrum sun cream is advised when outside.
