Chamomile Hydrosol

Distilled from our own fresh chamomile plants, picked in the afternoon, when dew has dried and the maximum level of plant constituents are available.

• Plants are  thoroughly dried, to eliminate moulds, whilst retaining their precious  essential oils. Distilling starts in the afternoons and often continues until 10PM, during the long summer evenings. 

• It is not uncommon for large manufacturers to remove the chamomile oil, to sell separately as an essential oil. Some even add distilled water to a tiny amount of essential oil. Neither are beneficial to skin and the latter method can be very irritating. 

Other Options: 

Calendula: best for sensitive, damaged or dehydrated skin.

Lavender: Suits normal to combination, especially for acne-prone.

Yarrow & Borage: Best for dry and sensitive, prone to rosacea and eczema.

Rose: Best for dry and acne-prone skin.

We keep a small amount of Evening Primrose, Cornflower,Lemon balm, Rosemary and Sage. If you would like one of these, please email. 

 

Keeping Hydrosols Fresh.

Please keep your hydrosol cool, out of sunlight and sealed. Once opened, they should be used within six months.

The bottle you receive has been screened for bacteria and moulds. Once opened, bacteria can be introduced to the bottle. If you notice a change in the smell or in the appearance, the bottle should be discarded.

As part of the EEC, we are obliged to preserve our hydrosols, to keep them safe to use (un-preserved water-based ingredients can carry dangerous bacteria, even when distilled in a perfectly clean environment). We use a thorough, but naturally occurring preservative.

Potential Allergies

It is important to check any plant allergies you might have. Some plants are in the same family, but have a different common name. We give you the exact plant we use so you can be clear about species and family.

 People do drink hydrosols, but ours are prepared for use on skin, not for drinking.  The individual constituents vary across species and there can even be disparity between the chemical structure of one sub-species and another. For this reason, we have taken our time whittling down our plant list and now grow just those with the best evidence of being beneficial to skin. 

All our crops are grown pesticides-free, GMC-free, GMO-free.

Chamomile are placed on wire trays to dry before distilling, to prevent moulds forming.

There is a growing trend to use hydrosols to cleanse skin as people become more aware of the potential harm harsh chemical can cause to us and our environment.

Hydrosols have been part of first aid packs and to treat various skin conditions, for centuries. Traces of yarrow and cornflower have been found as far back as Roman battle sites. Most offer some anti-septic, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties which made them useful for a wide variety of injuries. The History of Distilling Plants For Skincare.

We keep a few litres from every batch and continue to test these. We have some ten year old hydrosols with the same scent and pH, and no signs of blooming or detectable deterioration. Nevertheless, once bacteria are introduced, they will quickly become unsafe to use, especially to the eyes.
